In the last 2 weeks the shad have come on at Vidal and Mapalane, but catches have been pretty poor at St Lucia. There have been a few big shad but on the average most are smallish. Wind is always a problem in August, but we have had a couple of perfect days. Fishing this last winter has been poor with very few garrick caught and not many kingfish and most have been on live bait.

Sadly, every year the catches seem to decrease and probably this is due to overfishing and a general disregard for bag limits. For example, on a weekend they say there are 2000 anglers along the KZN coast. Now if they only take the bag limit of 4 shad per day that is 8 000 shad per day. And many anglers take well over the limit.

The lake of course is dropping, and the canal that was excavated at great cost to divert the Umfolozi into the estuary is almost completely silted up. In any case the Umfolozi is now dry so once again the town has a water problem.
