Louis Ernest Wolhuter was a beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather and friend. A geologist by profession, he held a doctorate from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, but his life encompassed far more than his academic and professional achievements.
He was a passionate outdoorsman and an accomplished fly fisherman, fishing extensively in both fresh and saltwater with fly tackle in South Africa, Canada, the USA and England. Over the years, his love of fly fishing brought him into contact and correspondence with many of the great personalities of the sport. In the USA these included Vincent Marinaro, Charlie Fox, Dan Bailey, Al McClane and the renowned fly tier “Buz” Buszek. Across the pond in the UK, he corresponded with Dermot Wilson, Charles Jardine and Frank Sawyer.
Louis made a lasting contribution to the fly-fishing community in South Africa. His involvement with FOSAF included being a founder member of the Yellowfish Working Group (YWG). He also edited numerous editions of the "Nedbank Guide to Fly Fishing in Southern Africa", as well as "The State of the Yellowfishes in South Africa" and "The FOSAF Guide to Flyfishing Destinations in Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean". He received the FOSAF Exemplary Award in 1998.
Louis was a true Renaissance man, with an enquiring mind and a wide range of passions. He had a particular interest in indigenous trees and shrubs, a talent for cooking and an abiding fascination with the immense tapestry of fly fishing and the natural world. His appreciation of nature was not merely that of an observer, but of someone who delighted in understanding, exploring, and sharing its wonders with others.
Louis will be fondly remembered as a humble and gentle man, a true gentleman in every sense of the word. His knowledge, kindness, passions, and quiet enthusiasm touched the lives of many and inspired all who knew him.
He leaves behind a rich legacy of friendship, knowledge, and a lifelong love of the natural world that will endure in the hearts of those who were privileged to know him.
