The leerys are still around the mouth area and some of the bait guys have hooked some on mullet up to 6kg or so. The younger fish are still concentrated in the mouth region and on a recent trip I got a lot in the 45cm to 55cm fork range. Clousers worked well with a long strip pause retrieve on an intermediate line. It's also a good time to start looking for the grunters on fly so keep your grunter charlies and deer hair prawns at hand during the start of the new season. Our water temperature has already started to warm up slightly and this weekend I measured temps of 15C in the Sundays and up to 16C in the Swartkops but it's still fluctuating between 14 and 16C. The cold fronts lately and big swells have discoloured the water on the start of the push and these days can make fishing tough but if you are keen to throw a fly in a 40 knot wind then enjoy. Our skippys should start arriving soon as well and with their numbers growing over the last 4 years and an average growth rate of 7cm to 10cm they should be a healthy 70cm to 80cm fork this year and this means we should all be in for an exciting skippy season like the old days. |
