Once again we have missed out on the sardines with only limited numbers coming into the South Coast. Far more have been netted up at Durban and the nearby coastline than the South Coast proper. In fact I hear that they were netting again off Durban beaches this week. A cold front came through recently but the wind has changed to North East so it will probably warm up and the sea will settle after a very stormy period. Sea temperatures have been very variable with temps varying from 16 to 21 C over a short period which indicates that the currents are possibly changing. Down at Port St Johns there are still large shoals of sardines but as is normal for the Transkei Coast these are well out to sea.

The good news is that there have been many more shad around than in the last 2 - 3 years but that is about all except for the odd kob and garrick although I hear that the fishing has been better at Port Edward.

Offshore the boats have had a fairly lean time with just a few tuna.

Only the Umzimkulu mouth is open at the moment and all the other estuaries are closed, very clear and cold with only a few resident fish around, but my brother did quite well last weekend with a 90 cm ignobilis, 2 perch and 1 rock salmon.
