Cape Piscatorial Society Newsletter

Hi Everyone

Only one week to go before the AGM - hope lots of you will make an effort to be there.   Remember there will be a cash bar and free snacks  - and this year we are going to make sure there are more snacks!

Back in the big smoke and with a lot of things to catch up on after a week in the desert and to be honest just a little out of touch with what's happening here. Mind you for all that even I can recognize that the river season is getting closer and with any luck we will be able to start fishing early in September, I really must make a plan to check out the streams shortly to see the state of play up there. But hopes are high and it will be nice to get into some trout and dry fly fishing again.

Myself, Mike and Albe had the most awesome trip up to the Orange River over the previous week, the weather was brilliant and we didn't need out waders, which was just as well as I think that we all discovered leaks in them. We explored new waters, avoiding the Richtersveld and travelling further to the East in the desert, hopping from one camp to another in search of fish.

You can read a detailed report of the trip and see some images on my paracaddis blog. We aren't quite sure as we didn't manage to keep accurate count but we estimate that we landed between 700 and 900 fish over the six odd days that we were actually up there on the river. We didn't manage to catch a barbel but we did catch smallmouths, largemouths and mudfish in abundance once we found them. It wasn't easy and we fished quite a bit of good looking water before hitting paydirt but as said check out the blog there are quite a few images from the trip on there to entertain and inspire you.

IMPORTANT NOTICE OF THE CPS AGM.

Please do note that the CPS AGM is coming up on the 18th of August at Kelvin Grove. 19.30 for a prompt start at 20.00.

World Youth Fly Fishing Championships Slovakia.

The SA youth team competed in the World Youth Fly Fishing Championships in Slovakia whilst we were away in the desert. The youngsters did well getting a seventh place over all although apparently they were looking as though they might do better early in the competition.

Individual results from the website differ slightly from the ones I was sent by SMS, the results from the web are:

Kieran Siney 21,Francois Malherbe 31, Jean Malherbe 36, Dirk Immelman 37, Josh Pictor 31 Overall there were 62 competitors from 11 teams. I am not sure how that works with five anglers per team unless there were a lot of substitutes but those are the results.

The Winners were the Czechs, followed by the Slovaks and Spain in third place, it is particularly tough when fishing out of your home turf and obviously local knowledge plays a part. Particularly if you are fishing for species that you haven't previously encountered..

Well done to the youngsters, I suspect that they would have liked to have done a bit better but at the same time this is a world event and they are all pretty new to it and it is a hard school to play in. So I think that we can be proud of the results.

Looking at some of the images on the internet it looked pretty tough, the water seemed high and coloured at least some of the time, one imagines rain during the competition perhaps. You can check out more details on the following links.

You can see a gallery of images from the competition at the following link it is well worth it there are some stunning shots of the rivers and the guys fishing on here. http://www.youthflyfishing2010.sk/index.php/en/gallery.html
