Social Angling Chairman’s Report September 2007

There are many RPA members who are mostly social anglers, but who don’t know each other very well. In today’s times, going to any waters on one’s own has become somewhat dangerous. It is also much more fun to share the day in the company of other anglers with whom you can trade ideas, successes and failures.

With this in mind, the social facet enjoyed their first outing to SOV over the weekend of 15 and 16 September. We met a number of members whom we have seen around, but not known, and found that they felt the same. At the end, all who joined us said they thoroughly enjoyed the experience, really felt ‘at home’ and welcome, and enjoyed the fact the there was no pressure to score points or outdo the others.

Every angler cheered for the others whenever a fish was hooked, even if it got away! The wisdom of the more mature was happily shared with the younger, less experienced angler. Tony was instrumental in our 4 year old granddaughter, Olivia, catching her first fish, when he gave us some very profitable tips on using sweet dough! Thanks for that Tony.

Old Grandpa had lots of fun teaching Olivia how to reel in those fish, as she promptly put us all to shame by hooking 6 fish over the weekend. That, however is where she drew the line – holding that fish was not on her agenda of ‘things to do this weekend”, so grandpa had to hold it for her. (Hey, she’s still young, she’ll learn!)

Saturday night saw us bundled up against a chilly evening breeze, huddling around the campfires where we traded stories of fishing funnies and disasters, a couple of beers, some steak, chops and wors, and a lot of laughter.

Brendon Botha and his mom and dad, Braam and Janice, joined us on Saturday evening, and Brendon made a great attempt at filling his net. To brothers Sidney and Steve, than you for joining us, we enjoyed your company and your stories.

To Allan and Marieta, Tony and Pat, thank you for the help you so willingly offer.
Thank you to all the others who joined us, even if for a sort while only. We look forward to having you with us again soon. We ended each day with a lucky draw as we were fortunate enough to have some items donated for our weekend of fun.

Those who joined us this weekend expressed a desire to have another social event soon, and SOV was voted as the venue again, so we will be hosting another outing near the end of October and look forward to having many social anglers join us.
